It is customary when becoming Bat or Bar Mitzvah to undertake a charity project known as a Tzedakah project. Jemma and Amelia have chosen Women’s Refuge as their charity, creating care packages for women and children who are forced to escape domestic violence and abusive situations often without any clothes or basic possessions. Children are uprooted from their homes and lives, leaving behind all that is precious to them, sometimes unable to take even one toy. Women leave with nothing, knowing that to protect themselves and their children they have no choice and if they are lucky, they find themselves a shelter such as provided by Women’s Refuge.
How can you help and be involved?
For the next six weeks Jemma and Amelia will be collecting items to place in these care packages, which will contain some essential items, some small luxuries, as well as messages of support from the Beth Shalom community. After discussion with a Women’s Refuge representative, they would be grateful if you could donate any of the following:
- Toothpaste, toothbrushes, hand lotion, deodorant, lip-gloss, shampoo, conditioner, soap.
- Baby food, milk formula (sachets or single packs), baby wipes, barrier cream, bottles and Sippy cups
It is preferred that the goods are new and of a reasonable quality so that the recipients feel special receiving the packages. A bin has been placed in the foyer at Beth Shalom for your donations.
Jemma and Amelia thank you very much for your support.
